The distillery has a tequila shop where many varieties of the exquisite liquor can be found in several presentations. The agave distills elaborated in the facilities called MAYAPAN is also available.
Tequila and Mezcal are also agave distills; both of them are elaborated from the fermentation and distill of the juice extracted from agave plants, but from different varieties. Tequila is distill specifically from Agave Azul (tequilana weber) and is produced in the region that includes the states of Jalisco, Michoacán, Nayarit, Guanajuato and Tamaulipas. Mezcal can be elaborated from diverse agave species, and is produced in the states of Oaxaca, Guerrero, Durango, San Luis Potosí and Zacatecas. They are the most representative spirits of Mexico in the world.
The word Tequila is believed to come from the Ticuilas tribe, who many years ago inhabited the slope of the volcano that today is known as the Tequila Hill in the city of the same name. Another possible origin is the náhuatl word tequilt that means: Place where a labor or work is carry out.
The oldest references to the existence of the agave and its different uses are found in prehispanic codex such as the Tonalmatlnahuatl, Nutall, Laud, Borgia and Florentino. In the prehispanic Mexico, the general name for all species of agave or mezcal, was Melt, which is a representation of the Goddess Mayahuel, and the beverage obtained from the agave was known as Iztac octli, white wine.
It wasn’t until the Spanish came to Mexico that they brought the knowledge of the Distill and the tequila took the form that we actually know.*
